Give a Cut, Save A Life

Better Cuts University
Trauma-Informed Barber Initiative
Better Cuts University is a community education and leadership development program designed to train barbers and other customer-facing professionals in trauma-informed communication, active listening practices, emotional wellness awareness, and suicide prevention education. The program equips barbers with tools to help facilitate meaningful individual and group conversations while recognizing that many people carry different lived experiences, stressors, and forms of trauma.
Our goal is not to train barbers to become therapists, but to strengthen their role as trusted community pillars who can create welcoming spaces for connection, conversation, and support while helping individuals become more aware of available resources, tools, and pathways to care. By expanding our coalition of trauma-informed community leaders, Better Cuts University helps strengthen community support networks across San Diego County and encourages a culture where men feel more comfortable engaging in conversations surrounding wellness, personal growth, and help-seeking on their own terms.
Better Cuts Christian Ministries
Faith Based Initiative
The purpose of this initiative is to simply share the gospel through cutting hair. We also use this platform to go into congregations and share the importance of mental health education in collaboration with biblical scripture.
Shape UP
Career Technical Education Initiative
This program provides a barbering basics course for youth ages 13 to 18, offering vocational skills and career pathways in the growing haircare industry. By using barbering to build self-esteem and connect with youth facing behavioral or mental health challenges, creating a supportive alternative to punitive discipline while addressing the stigma around seeking help.
“Taking my son to a trauma-informed barber has been life-changing. After the loss of my husband, not only does he get a great haircut, but he also receives the emotional support and understanding he needs. It's a safe space where he feels heard and valued.”
